You Know

We live in a society of advice columns, experts and make-over shows. Without even knowing it, you can begin to believe someone knows better than you how to live your life. Someone might know a particular something better – like how to bake a three-layer molten coconut chocolate cake or how to build a website – but nobody else on the planet knows how to live your life better than you. (Although one or two people may think they do.) For today, trying asking yourself often, especially before you make a choice, “What do I know about this?”   (Author: Jen Louden)

This was a great prompt for today.  It really hits home for me because I have been in a situation at work in which the boss seems to think that most of us are incompetent, lazy, no-good workers.  News came today that this particular boss will not be returning.  I cannot tell you the tremendous amount of stress this one person has caused in the workplace.  Morale is at an all-time low, people have been out on stress leave, and there is an overall sense of misery there.

I said all of that to say, through all the drama and trauma, I have still held on to the belief that I am very good at what I do.  No matter how many times this person tried (and boy there were several attempts) I held my ground.  I know my worth and I know that the job I do is not for or about the boss, it is for the children.

I have figured out over the past couple of years that I will be a life learner, meaning I will not proclaim to be a know-it-all.  There is simply too much in this big beautiful world to know.  I try to learn something new everyday.  I do research on things related to my career and try to better myself in the process.  I am a work in progress, getting better as the days pass.

I really wanted to celebrate the good news of this person’s departure, but I knew that was not the right thing to do.  I had to make a conscious effort to suppress my feelings of jubilation.  I had to make a choice.  I know that I wouldn’t want someone to do that to me.  I was, however, smiling on the inside and outside.  That bit of news made the day smoother and more bearable.
